How do formal group shots work?

Let’s talk about formal group photos—you know, the ones with parents, siblings, aunties, uncles, and the whole extended crew.

They’re an important part of the day, but they can also be a bit… chaotic. The good news? I’ve got a tried-and-true method to make them smooth, quick, and even a little bit fun.

Step 1: We Chat and Make a Plan

Before the big day, we’ll have a chat about group shots. Some couples want just a few quick family photos, others want a full set with every combination of cousins, grandparents, and godparents.

 We’ll go over:

  •  Who needs to be in the formal shots

  •  Who you’d like to include

  •  How long you’re willing to spend doing them

This way, we can keep things efficient and avoid any unnecessary waiting around on the day.

Step 2: Choose Your MVP (Most Vocal Person)

Here’s the secret weapon: I’ll ask you to nominate a loud, bossy, organised friend or family member - someone who knows who everyone is and isn’t afraid to do a bit of shouting. This helps gather the right people at the right time so we’re not chasing Uncle Dave from the bar or waiting for Cousin Emma to come back from the loo.

Trust me, this one step makes a massive difference!

Step 3: We Get It Done—Quickly and With Zero Awkwardness

On the day, I’ll be ready with the list we agreed on. We’ll breeze through the combinations, I’ll give direction when needed, and keep things moving with a relaxed, friendly vibe.

It usually takes around 20 minutes, depending on how many shots you want - but the goal is always the same: get the formal photos done swiftly so you can get back to mingling, hugging, drinking champagne, or whatever else you fancy doing on your wedding day.
